English

At Elson Infant School we have developed an engaging English curriculum that immerses pupils in learning that is memorable, meaningful and fun. We are passionate about developing our pupils’ love of reading, writing and spoken language. Our English curriculum enables pupils to acquire and develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary they need to be successful readers and writers.

All of our children are taught phonics using the Read Write Inc. programme. For further information about Read Write Inc. (RWI), please have a look at their website

For handwriting, our children are taught Kinetic Letters, if you would like to find out more, please go to the Kinetic Letters website.

Reading

We are keen for the children at Elson Infant School to develop a real love of reading. In school, the children enjoy a variety of different reading experiences throughout the week. We also encourage the children to read regularly at home by taking part in ‘Teamwork Tia’s Reading Challenge’.

Every class has an inviting book-corner where the children can relax and enjoy a good book.

Each half-term we chose a different author to focus on in our classrooms and in the corridor. The children are able to talk about which books they have enjoyed reading the most and share their opinions with others.

Writing

We use a range of high quality texts that bring the learning to life and incorporate these into our writing journey. The children are encouraged to write for a variety of different purposes and audiences using the skills and techniques they have learned along the way.

National Story Telling Week Feb 2024

This week we have loved hearing and sharing a range of stories. Mrs Chaisty launched the week with an interactive assembly where the children had to guess the book. Yesterday we welcomed parents into school for our Reading Cafe. We hope we have inspired parents to have lots of fun reading and reciting much loved stories at home.
