Science at Elson Infant School

Our vision for Science

At Elson Infant School we believe that Science nurtures children’s natural curiosity and encourages them to ask questions about the world. Children will be given the opportunities to investigate and answer their questions through first hand experiences and observations. They will be taught the skills they need in order to do this independently and will be challenged to make connections between scientific ideas.

In Year R children learn about Science through the EYFS strand ‘The world’. During their Discovery Time they are able to explore a range of investigative activities and each week they go to the forest to observe and talk about changes in the natural world.

In Year 1 and Year 2 the children begin to cover the wide range of KS1 topics in the Science Curriculum. They learn about animal groups, habitats, materials, and growth of plants through science units which are enhanced by investigations.

Each year we have a Science Week where we plan daily experiments to inspire the children, give them a sense of awe and wonder and to encourage them to ask questions. This week has proved to be a lot of fun for the children!
